The building was designed by Dixon and Stienley of North Shields, and it opened in 1920. From 1928 the cinema also hosted cine-variety shows until the talkies arrived in 1930. The cinema was taken over by the Star group in the 1950s and it closed in 1975. The Abbeydale is a very large old fashioned building. It is not designed for the cinema-going requirements of the public of today (quote from the Star). The building was later converted for use as an office furniture showroom and warehouse, and is one of the best preserved cinema buildings in Sheffield.
